Richard Stallman is the person who started the GNU project, which lead to the creation of the GNU/Linux operating system. He is somewhat popular on /g/.

Richard Mathew Stallman (RMS) quit his job at MIT writing operating systems to dedicate his life to making an operating system that anyone was free to edit, inspect, share, and use for any reason. The operating sytem ended up becoming what most people call Linux, after many other people contributed to it. He was the person who started the "free software movement" a movement to give users control over their computers by promoting software that allows users to edit and share the software freely. The "free" in free software means freedom, not price. His ideas influenced the open source software movement, which emphasizes the practical advantages of free software while while ignoring the ethics related to software.

People (mostly left wing "open source" people) have been trying to cancel him because of his statements regarding sexual assault, necrophilia, and pedophilia. They are also making up lies about him (like that he is anti-lgbt and dosen't respect pronouns), or that he defended Epstein.

This is an example of an article that came out during the first movement to cancel him (it mischaractarizes statements made by him) https://www.vice.com/en/article/famed-computer-scientist-richard-stallman-described-epstein-victims-as-entirely-willing/

https://stallmansupport.org/
is a website defending him.

He is a meme on /g/ due to his large contributions ethical and technical contributions to technology, and due to his uncompromising attitude towards proprietary software. He refuses to own a cell phone, use hotels, use pay toilets, use any proprietary software ever, etcetera.

I guess I'll give a bunch of reasons. By Linux, I mean open source desktop GNU/Linux.
1. Freedom, In Linux most if not all of the programs can be audited and if they have some feature you don't like, you are free to change it and share your changes with others. Proprietary operating systems like Windows can spy on you and you can't do anything about it, on linux you could download the source code of the program, and remove the code that spys on you. Even if you don't know how to program, it still protects you since you can get modified programs from people who do, or you could ask someone you know to change something about a program. Most linux distros don't force you to update your software.
2. Choice, there are a lot of different choices you can make when using linux. The first choice is what distro you want to use, you can also choose your window manager, and there are many different programs that can be configured to act different ways. I'd say the big thing is window manager choice though. There are a lot of different workflows you can choose between by changing your window manager or distro.

3. Package managers, package managers are like app stores. Most Linux distros have large repositories of open source software that can be installed with package managers. If you want to set something up, you can type a command to install all the prerequisite software, and you don't have to worry about going on the internet and downloading everything manually. The package managers keep track of making sure that different software versions don't conflict with each other. Certain package managers have advanced features, such as being able to rollback all your software to previous versions of the software in case an update breaks something (NixOs). Windows and Apple have package managers, but you usually have to install software outside of the package manager, whereas in linux, all the software that you use can be managed by your package manager. Package managers let you get the source code of a program you are using, which can be useful if you want to study the program to see how someone did something.
4. Programming, there are a lot of free and open source programming tools made for linux which run well on linux. It is very easy to install the libraries and programming languages you need with a package manager.
5. Terminal, Linux has good support for the command line, which can be helpful if you want to automate things, or do things quickly. I think windows powershell might be a better command line though. I haven't used powershell much but from what I read, it seems like it's better designed than bash.

6. Novelty, it can be fun to try something new and learn new things.
7. Configurability, A lot of programs can be configured heavily on Linux. It can be fun to customize your programs to act the way you want them to.
8. Old hardware, Linux runs well on older hardware. If you have an old laptop that is running super slowly with windows, then you can usually install linux on it and it will run fast again. You can also choose to use a less intensive window manager if the linux distro is running slowly.

There is a lot of shit that is wrong with Linux. I have been using it since 2017 and it triggers me how there are so many linux cultists refuse to admit any faults with their OS. Over time, I've grown to hate Linux more and more, but I still like it a more than Windows so I keep using it.
