A better example for your original premise would be shounenshitters who watch mostly so they can do powerlevel discussion and speculation about what's going to happen in next chapters, or so they can repeat their inane memes in threads. Still I don't think its a bad thing to derive most of your enjoyment of something from discussing it with others rather than from the thing itself. Touhou has an innumerable amount of secondaries and tertiaries for similar reasons as the shounenshitters, because discussing touhou gameplay/touhou adjacent media is enjoyable for them.
